The design of a microgrid-based charging station for electric vehicles poses multiple challenges. The charging station must be capable of charging the EV batteries to their respective user-defined setpoints during normal steady-state operation. However, the batteries should also be capable of temporarily reducing or reversing their currents to support the microgrid during load and islanding transients. In order to address these competing design requirements for charging and transient discharging operation, a promising hybrid AC/DC microgrid configuration has been proposed and investigated that addresses these challenges.
